Artwork Size: 18 x 12 in "Society II" is a surrealistic-style painting by Cuban artist Carlos Gamez de Francisco. This piece is from a recent series the artist created using watercolor, graphite, and ink on paper. As in his other portrait series, the artist continues to challenge and reimagine traditional forms of portraiture. Francisco was inspired by the significance of flowers as dream symbols. This series interprets the dream of flowers growing out of the head as the "blossoming of good ideas." Francisco also uses flowers to represent love, femininity, and a sense of pride or accomplishment. He depicts his subject in a 17th-century dresses as a symbol of wealth and success. Francisco also includes insects throughout the work. Insects flying up represent freedom, insects flying down or falling represent chaos, and insects at rest represent balance between the two.
